2007 OSTA Fall Conference

"Celebrating Oklahoma's Centennial with Science"

October 18, 2007          Omniplex Science Museum, Oklahoma City

For the second year in a row, OSTA's Fall Conference was held at Omniplex Science Museum in Oklahoma City.  The photos below provide an overview of the conference activities.

 

 Dr. Julie Angle, out-going OSTA President, opened the Fall Conference with introductions and welcoming remarks.   Dr. Bruce Hoagland, Oklahoma Biological Survey, presented one of the many break-out sessions available to conference participants.
  Marie Pool, Clinton High School science teacher, demonstrated NASA's latest educational resources for participants.
 Suzie Shields, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and Don Bell, Oklahoma City Community College, discussed DEQ educational resources available to teachers.  Christina Stallings, Oklahoma Project Learning Tree state director, explains PLT's environmental education resources and teacher training to Debbie Short, Stillwater High School science teacher.
  Jennifer Ellis, Mannford science teacher, exhibited CPO's inquiry-based science education materials.   Among the exhibitors were the Oklahomans for Excellence in Science Education, an organization dedicated to protecting the integrity of science education in the state.
 
    Dr. Suzanne Spradling, OSTA President, and Dr. Stan Rice, SEOSU biology professor and keynote speaker for the conference, discussed his new book, An Encyclopedia of Evolution.      Kim Kehring, Jennifer Johnson, and Megan Rogers, Oklahoma State University preservice science teachers, picked up valuable ideas and materials that will help them become effective science teachers.
Eileen Grzybowski's workshop, "Kinesthetic Astronomy," provided a variety of activities for teachers that make astronomy more student-centered.  Eileen teaches at Norman North High School.
Shannon Stoup and Carey Robinson, OSU preservice teachers, enjoyed box lunches that were provided as part of the registration fee.  
      David Dixon, science teacher at Tulsa's Daniel Webster High School, was recognized by OSTA as the High School Science Teacher of the year.
     Dr. Ed Marek, OU Professor of Science Education, received OSTA's prestigious Jack Renner Award for 2007.  Dr. Marek was a graduate student and colleague of Dr. Renner. Tom Creider, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, discussed how to use Oklahoma's State Parks as educational resources.
